Much of the inner-Austin area will be shut down this weekend, overrun by industry execs from the film, music, and tech world. That is, essentially, what South by Southwest means to Austinites. It sounds miserable, I know, but at least we can mooch as much as possible from the festival by attending its many free shows, and quite a few of the showcases have amazing artists. Here’s a few sets that are free and (fairly) easy to get into, and seriously can’t be missed.
Gotta give wicked credit to Houston for putting on an annual music fest with a consistently good line-up that DOESN’T include Paul Wall every year (not that I would complain).
My crew and I went last year and despite the intense heat (it’s in the first week of June), we were able to enjoy great sets from The Flaming Lips, Snoop Dogg (just before his “Snoop Lion” fiasco), Z-Ro Morris Day & the Time, Afrojack, Diplo, Wallpaper, Fitz & the Tantrums, among others.
Without further ado, here’s the 2013 Free Press Summer Fest line-up (and can I mention how AWESOME it is that Quad City DJs are performing?! Come on, ride the train, it’s the choochoo train, woo woo!!):

We first posted about Brenton Duvall a few months ago when he tore it up with “Ambien (Sleepy Trip),” where he mashed Lil Wayne and Passion Pit. He’s back with another epic mash up, this time with 90s one-hit wonders Semisonic, and none other than Biggie, himself.
Xaphoon Jones is one half of Chiddy Bang, and he just dropped his second mixtape, cleverly titled Mixtape Vol. 2. We decided to give you guys one of our favorite (and most creative) tracks off the mixtape, a mash up of Jackson 5’s “I Want You Back” and Passion Pit’s “Sleepy Head.”
