We’ve broken down Free Press Summer Fest into two days of Must-See action! We’ve got a variety of acts from punk, pop, rock, dance and hip hop.

There may be a few set conflicts, but these are the best of the best if you’re looking for a crunk and twerktastic Free Press weekend!

BC’s 15 “Must-See” Artists at South By Southwest 2013

sxsw+2013-1

Much of the inner-Austin area will be shut down this weekend, overrun by industry execs from the film, music, and tech world. That is, essentially, what South by Southwest means to Austinites. It sounds miserable, I know, but at least we can mooch as much as possible from the festival by attending its many free shows, and quite a few of the showcases have amazing artists. Here’s a few  sets that are free and (fairly) easy to get into, and seriously can’t be missed.

FPSF 2013 Line-Up feat. The Stooges, Postal Service, Macklemore…

freepress

The initial Free Press Summer Fest 2013 line-up was announced today… and it’s fan-freakin-tastic.

Gotta give wicked credit to Houston for putting on an annual music fest with a consistently good line-up that DOESN’T include Paul Wall every year (not that I would complain).

My crew and I went last year and despite the intense heat (it’s in the first week of June), we were able to enjoy great sets from The Flaming Lips, Snoop Dogg (just before his “Snoop Lion” fiasco), Z-Ro Morris Day & the Time, Afrojack, Diplo, Wallpaper, Fitz & the Tantrums, among others.

Without further ado, here’s the 2013 Free Press Summer Fest line-up (and can I mention how AWESOME it is that Quad City DJs are performing?! Come on, ride the train, it’s the choochoo train, woo woo!!):

Brenton Duvall | “Time For What You Want (Notorious B.I.G. v. Semisonic)”

We first posted about Brenton Duvall a few months ago when he tore it up with “Ambien (Sleepy Trip),” where he mashed Lil Wayne and Passion Pit. He’s back with another epic mash up, this time with 90s one-hit wonders Semisonic, and none other than Biggie, himself.

Xaphoon Jones | “The Jackson Pit (Jackson 5 v. Passion Pit)”

Xaphoon Jones is one half of Chiddy Bang, and he just dropped his second mixtape, cleverly titled Mixtape Vol. 2. We decided to give you guys one of our favorite (and most creative) tracks off the mixtape, a mash up of Jackson 5’s “I Want You Back” and Passion Pit’s “Sleepy Head.”

You can also download the full mixtape (for free) here.

Brenton Duvall | “Blow The Skrilla (Skrillex v. Too $hort)”

Producer and mash-up deejay Brenton Duvall, who gave us the awesome Lil Wayne/Passion Pit track, drops another crunk joint on us. This time, he takes dubstep crew Skrillex, and throws in some rhymes from hip hopper Too $hort. It’s not quite as club-worthy as some of his other tracks, but it has a great electronic sound and beat.

I’m both surprised and blown away by this mash-up. It’s nothing short of pure, crunk, awesomeness. Who would’ve thought Passion Pit and Weezy would work so well together? Apparently producer/DJ Brenton Duvall did, and we thank him for it.
